8th March,
I set up this corner to honor Aunty Mathilda’s memory in my dad’s house just below the altar.
The palm represents Aunty’s years in Goa.
The wood carvings represent her years in Kenya.
The white chrysanthemums symbolise her love for everyone, and the orange roses symbolise the life she lived.
Aunty, Thank you for everything. Rest in peace
Shelly, Justo, Sharon and Sonya

Dear Iona, Dave, Clifford, Claire, Sinead and Craig,
May God give you strength and grace to bear the loss of your dear mum. We hope the memories we share of your dear mum bring a smile and lift you up.
When I think of Aunty Mathilda, so many endearing memories come to mind... it’s hard to choose a few.
Aunty was a beautiful lady, with a keen sense of style. She was a trail blazer and well ahead of her time. She understood the phrase 'to be well dressed'- meant being groomed from head to toe. I was in awe at how Aunty trimmed her own hair and styled it like a pro! Her skin so soft, as she diligently followed a skin care routine; Sharon as a little girl, would sit with her in front of the dressing table, watching her with fascination. Aunty's dress sense was impeccable; from her dress to shoes and handbag, always coordinated, which earned her the reputation around Nairobi as "the well-dressed lady from Barclays.” Aunty was a talented dress maker, and I was privileged to experience this first hand when she sewed my wedding dress over the course of a few weekends. I was in disbelief! The dress was perfect!
Another fond memory was the banter between Uncle Cyril and Aunty Mathilda
Uncle Cyril: Do you know how many proposals Aunty had?
Aunty: How many times are you telling the same story?
Uncle: Aunty had 22 proposals, Mathil, isn't that true?
Aunty: Yes
Uncle: Do you know all of them are dead except me!
Me: Aunty, you chose the best
And we would all laugh.
A handsome couple indeed!
Sharon rated Aunty's chicken curry as the best! Our friends would earnestly ask Sharon "how is the chicken?". After feasting on the meal and clearing her plate, her reply would be "But Aunty's chicken is hot and tasty!”, much to the dismay of the cook!
Though Aunty was a busy lady; banker and home-maker, she always made time for others. I remember she helped many Goans when they immigrated to other parts of the world, offering her home as a refuge when needed. She was thoughtful and generous and made a lasting impact on everyone who crossed her path.
We were lucky enough to visit Aunty in Toronto just before her 90th birthday in 2013. After a day of shopping in the city, Sonya was parading her new clothes for Aunty. She enjoyed the show and tell immensely- like a kid in a candy store. Watching the expressions on both Aunty and Sonya's faces; that of pure joy, I realised, Sonya had inherited Aunty's passion for fashion!
Aunty, you truly lived a life of values, filled with joy. You were a beacon of light, touching many lives and inspiring others.
Dear Aunty, thank you for everything.
Rest in peace.
Love, Shelly, Justo, Sharon and Sonya

Dear Iona and Cliff, and the larger family.
Please accept our condolences on the passing of your mom/grandma/auntie.
I remember meeting Mathilda in the 1980s in Nairobi, Kenya. I was a young teacher in my 20s, teaching with Mathilda's niece and nephew, Shelly and Justo, now long time friends. They took me to meet their auntie in Parklands (I think), Nairobi. I was feeling awkward meeting her for the first time cuz I knew she was a banker, not just with an ordinary bank out there but with Barclays. But above all, well sourced rumours had confirmed to me that she also had a great fashion sense! So I expected to meet someone who would start assessing my worth from the shoes I was wearing on my feet to the style of my hair on my head!
When we got to Parklands, however, Mathilda had such a disarming smile, was genuinely friendly, gracious and welcoming that I very quickly forgot my awkwardness. Mathilda was cool, generous and loving. May she dance with the Angels.

My Deepest Condolences to you Clifford, Claire, Sinead, Iona and family.
Aunty Mathilda, was a gem of a person. She was very elegant yet extremely humble. During her short stay in Tollecanto, Goa, we were privileged to spend time with her. She was always well dressed, cheerful, very loving and a beautiful person indeed. She loved to eat Goan food especially the Recheado fish which is a Goan delicacy, was her favourite. Time spent with aunty Mathilda will not be forgotten as she was one of a kind of a person. Her life is an example of how one should live and be a blessing to others. She will be in our prayers always and may god grant her soul eternal peace.
Sending love and prayers from: Edwin, Nancy and Nishita Rebello.

Aunty Matilda was an epitome of gentleness, love and warmth. She cared for her brothers, sisters, nephews, nieces and their families too. She couldn't hurt anyone. She once told me that her father had told Uncle Cyril on their wedding day that " Muge chodoon menache" Meaning my daughter is made of wax take good care of her. Aunty looked very delicate and beautiful. She was a beautiful soul. May her soul rest in eternal peace. God bless you , Iona, Clifford, Dave, Claire, Sinead and Craig. Aunty Matilda will live in our hearts forever. Love and Hugs from Ferdinand, Jatin, Ribhav and me (Semele)
