To the family of Clare, my sincerest condolences on the loss of your wife, mother, grandmother, and sister. Clares family and mine became friends after we moved onto Bloomfield Road. I was telling someone how a group of us would jump on our bike and ride out to Ojibway park with a lunch and hike through the bush, a lot of great memories. Rest in Peace Clare!

Thank you Aunt Clare for teaching me to canoe, for all the camping trips over the years, for taking care of me and my family every time we passed through Oshawa (which was often!) For hosting Thanksgiving dinner and making Rowan's favourite mashed potatoes (pretty sure that was Uncle Mike but Rowan is convinced they are yours). For sending me a birthday card, and then my family birthday cards (and lottery tickets) every year. For helping out at my wedding. For visiting when my babies were born and for being Mateo's Godmother. You're the best.

I still can't believe my Aunt Clare is gone; that I will never get to hear her laughter or hear her stories again.
But we have our memories. I want to share just a few of the many great memories I have of her.
As children, our family and hers would go camping. Anyone who knew her knew her affinity for the outdoors. Aunt Clare knew all the fun places to go and things to do and made camping really fun for us kids. She had everything anyone could possibly need for a great camping trip, in duplicate and triplicate. She even made gourmet meals. I don't think many other kids had things like filet mignon cooked on a camp stove!
And while she was outdoors, if she saw a cool animal, she would take tons of photos on her camera, which had lots of "megapickles." I recall a stop-motion series of a faraway moose. We practically got to see it eat lunch in real time.
Years later, when my sister was getting married, she travelled down to Sarnia to help my mom and I set up and decorate our parish hall for the reception. We decided we wanted to hang sheer curtains as a backdrop, but we needed some supplies, like a rope, clips, and tape. "I have all those things in my vehicle!" To this day, I am not sure how she travelled with an entire Walmart in her vehicle, but she always had a supply of even the most obscure things. Like purple felt to dress up the cake table. Purple felt? No problem! She had some in her vehicle.
It was a true joy to celebrate Thanksgiving with all of our extended families (and a few friends!). Many years ago, she had made a turkey for us as we celebrated at my grandmother's house in Windsor. It was the best turkey I ever tasted, and as I exclaimed this, she looked surprised as she laughed that it had been on fire and she had put out the turkey with a fire extinguisher. We talked about the delicious "fire extinguisher" turkey for years afterward. "Extra seasoning!"
Aunt Clare always loved gathering together with family and friends and she loved to be active and involved in her community. I am so grateful to have had her in my life and for all the time we got to spend together. Thank you for the hilarious birthday cards and the memories I will get to keep forever.
To everyone reading this, we know that the light around us is a little dimmer now without her, but she is still interceding for us in Heaven. To the Ford family, our thoughts and prayers are with you. Aunt Clare: rest in peace. You are loved and missed.
Love, Angela

Mother-in-Law,
I am finding it incredibly difficult to put into words everything you have meant to me, you were so much more than an in-law, you were a friend, and another parent. As I sit in silence with my thoughts, I quickly remember one of the first times we met. I was 15 and working on a class project with Michelle. For this project we ended up needing costumes and when we showed up to ask, you immediately had the largest grin on your face, only asking how many do you need? But before we could answer you were gone, digging through your supplies, returning with 3 options for every conceivable character, and some I'm pretty sure even I could not have imagined.
This was the first time I got to experience the joy it was to be a part of your world, and I am so very thankful that down the road I got to be a part of your family.
I have countless fond memories of family dinners, dog walks, birthdays, euchre nights, camping, garden projects, Christmases and my most favorite Thanksgiving dinner with the full family all gathered around laughing and catching up, truly my fondest memories.
With all of these events, you are at the very center with the rest of us, just trying to keep up, laughing the entire time.
As I remember, I can't help but reflect upon our many conversations we have had over the years.
Many of them tiny, many of them silly, many of them funny, many of them contemplative and oh so many educational and motherly.
Through all these years, I never thought of what our last conversation would be.
I am truly thankful that it was over a family dinner, and I feel it is ever so fitting that it was about the best way to prepare the meal we were having.
No matter what you always made me feel welcome. No matter how talkative I was, you were alway right there with me, keeping up. That simple joy of conversation with you has meant a great deal to me and will be forever missed.
You have taught me so much and I will keep all of your advice to heart, and always keep you in my thoughts and prayers.
Until we meet again, I will forever miss you.
Son-in-Law

Oh my dear sister,
You brought joy and laughter to so many people, I appreciated meeting all your friends who shared their heart warming and often hilarious memories.
As little kids, you were the most helpful … and useful … child – especially digging out the basement, operating the wheelbarrow and painting the bus & fence. We had barrels of laughs with the train game, playing cards, long summers and beach days. And of course scaring ourselves silly (OK – it was me – all me scaring her) with stories of the lady spy under the bed. In high school, we shared cadets and rifle team. You became a caring and compassionate nurse – and permanent afternoons was the perfect shift for you – you crazy night owl!
When I moved away, I looked forward to your letters keeping me informed of the news at home. But then, the BEST letter EVER!!! You were keeping a secret and your excitement was exploding off the page. His name is Michael! A wonderful, joy-filled wedding to this gorgeous boy…. then came the “complaints” – one pair of jeans was a whole load of laundry, the seat in the car needed to be adjusted every time AND the shower head. He was so tall, and you were so small and you fit perfectly together.
You loved being home with the kids and life revolved around your family. Oshawa felt far away when they were little (wrong side of Toronto). I’m so glad we spent time visiting back and forth and seeing you in Windsor with Mom & Dad and the Fords. The camping trips – the “Earwig week”, the Kenora Family reunion when you jack-knifed the trailer and we were surrounded by cows at midnight – so many stories that keep us laughing.
Russell moved East and Simon moved to Whitby and your welcoming home became our gathering spot. You were Simon’s second mom – looking after feeding him on holidays and just being there for him. And when you and Michael visited the American Fords our house was your rest stop. I’m so glad for those many opportunities to be together.
The long regular phone calls – hearing about trainings, Gilwell weekends & CJ, your Newfoundland friend who doesn’t fly and drove you across the country. Swimming fun, dinners with friends, the best job ever as ski liftie (when they changed to the magic carpet – my sister DOES NOT like change), protecting the dog park, all the news of our kids. And always an extra half hour to say goodbye! Oh how I will miss all this, my beloved sister!
The love and care you and Michael have shown for each other is a shining example of the graces of our Sacrament of Marriage.
It was a privilege to spend time with you over the last eight years with all the ups and downs. You fought the good fight and finished the race, you kept the faith. May you rest in peace, my sister, my friend,
With much love,
JoAnne

It's hard to say goodbye. It's hard and it hurts.
But when you take the time... the time to stop and think... you remember all the times we shared.
And you know what? All the memories are good.
Aunt Clare taught me how to swim!
I remember I was 6...maybe 7... maybe 8?
At some unnamed beach at some campground in Ontario...
But, I knew how to swim...
Then Aunt Clare saw me in the water:
"No, not like that!"
She yelled as I was swimming back and forth
"Like this!"
And she took me by the hand,
and she taught me how to stroke,
and she took my feet,
and she taught me how to kick.
And you know what? It clicked!
And then I knew how to swim.
I remember I was 26... maybe 27... maybe 28?
In my late twenties, I decided to teach myself how to snowboard.
I knew how to snowboard...
But, I did not know how to get off a magic carpet without falling flat on my face.
Aunt Clare taught me how!
"No, not like that!"
She yelled on my first time around, as I nearly knocked down an innocent bystander
"Like this!"
And she took me by the hand,
and she showed me how,
And you know what? It clicked!
And then I knew how to snowboard.
And just like so many things Aunt Clare taught me... how she taught so many people...
She taught us how to enjoy the outdoors,
how to follow life's adventures,
how to live life to the fullest,
always with kindness, and compassion, and a drive to help others.
And also always with a firm tone when you're doing something wrong!
I know for a fact, I'm not the only person who's sole plan in case of emergency...
or total global catastrophe…
was to just make it to Aunt Clare's house.
She was always prepared... She always knew what to do…
And when she was there, you knew everything would be ok.
I remember when Aunt Clare first got sick.
We decided to do Thanksgiving at her house.
But, this time the kids were going to do everything! Help pitch in for once.
I occasionally like to cook.
And, I knew how to cook.
So I was going to cook the turkey!
But, I did not know how to cook a turkey...
Aunt Clare knows how to cook a turkey!
So I knew... I was going to learn how to cook a turkey!
And this became a new tradition! We did it for what seemed like so many years.
I always cooked the Turkey!
But... I never learned how to cook a turkey...
Because Aunt Clare was always there. I never had to worry. Everything would be ok.
Aunt Clare I don't know what we are going to do without you.
I pray you know that you are missed, and that you will always be loved.
Thank you for everything
Your nephew,
Simon

Q: What will you never forget about Clare?
A: I will always remember Clare’s passion for camping and the outdoors. I am so thankful for her encouragement and support in connecting me with a job at camp at a young age. This connection paved the way for many opportunities that have greatly shaped my life for the better. I still have and use camping equipment Clare gifted me over 20 years ago! Clare was a caring woman who loved her family deeply. My prayers are with you all at this time.

Mike, Michelle and family, there are no words to describe your loss. You are in my thoughts and prayers. Clare left such a beautiful legacy, in her children, grandchildren and our community. When I think of Clare, I see her beautiful smile. We were neighbors in the 80s and 90s and in 2001 she helped me move to my current home. She was my son's cub leader. I looked forward to walking with her at the Harmony Dog Park. As president of ODAWG she dedicated endless time maintaining this environment for our furry friends. Clare you left the world a better place and for that we thank you. Goodbye dear friend.

Thanks to Clare , Ill be retiring with 34 years of service !
It was years ago during a traumatic time in my life, when my emotional state was at an all time low, that I had packed it all in and was moving to the east coast. I had two dogs in tow ,no job to go to ,no place to lay my head and would have had no friends or family to go to for help. I had no plan, I was running away blindly !
My car was already packed when Clare called me and asked me to drop by on my way out. In just a few hours over a few cups of tea ,she had convinced me to stay in Oshawa where I could feel safe and figure things out. I'm sure this intervention was planned by my sister Denise and Clare ,because I was invited to rent a basement apartment from a friend of Clare's that very day ! I lived in Oshawa for approximately eight months and during that time Clare spent countless hours walking and talking with me ..being my counsellor .
Thanks to her intervention I stayed in the vicinity and with my employer. With a better state of mind I eventually moved back to Toronto and my job.
Over the years since then ,our camping trips were what I considered "our time " They were filled with so much laughter ,long chats around the fire ,heart felt discussions, and long walks exploring the park. Even in the rain our setups were nonstop laughter ! All the troubles and stress of the previous months would just melt away.
On our canoe trips Clare always took the stern. On one of these trips Clare jumped out of the canoe (in the middle of the lake ) to assist my senior dog who had jumped out of the canoe without my knowledge. Once again Clare to the rescue!
I could go on and on but just one last thing
Bacon and eggs in a brown paper bag would have us in tears of laughter. ! Love you Clare !

Q: How did you meet Clare?
A: I met Clare through Scouting when my son joined Cubs about 18 years ago. She was at all the major camping events both far away, near and at Camp Samac. She always made everyone feel so welcomed with her contagious smile, laugh, sense of humour and true kindness. She stood out with her leadership, and helping hand whenever anyone needed it. Her imagination for making things fun always brought joy to the kids and adults alike. We can't say enough about Clare. She will never be forgotten and will always be in our hearts. ♥

Clare had such an impact on so many people, myself included. Mother's group with our babies, Beavers and Cubs as the boys got older, the dog park where my "grand dogs" now love to run on a daily basis.
Camping together at Algonquin, canoeing to Lake of Two Rivers to see the sunset, watching shooting stars in the middle of the night, swimming in the rain in Pog Lake, her freshly baked muffins on a cool camp morning.
Our monthly dinners out with a girlfriend, endless cups of tea, talking and laughing on the front porch.
Bike rides on the Oshawa creek trail or along the Algonquin bike trail.
So many good memories over the course of our 40 year friendship. You will be missed good friend.
Our deepest condolences to Mike, Michelle and Terry, Jonathan and Melinda, Regan, Christopher and Darcy, Bhodi

My mother was an incredible woman and a true force of nature. If you ever needed anything you knew you could always call my mom and she would be there an instant. She always had a solution to every problem, and if she saw something that needed to be done, she did it. She was instrumental in getting the city to preserve the former Harmony Valley Conservation Area as an off-leash dog park and served as the president of its volunteer organization, ODAWG, since its inception.
She dedicated her life to caring for her family, and when her children were grown, she discovered her dream job as a ski lift operator at the Lakeridge Ski Resort. While standing out in the freezing cold all day wouldn’t be most people’s idea of a good time, my mother loved it and always took great pride in her work helping beginner skiiers navigate the tow-rope, later replaced by the magic carpet, on the bunny hill and keeping things running smoothly and safely. She was incredibly honoured when this past winter Lakeridge renamed the lift Clare’s Carpet in recognition of her hard work and service.
Anybody who knew her knew her love of the outdoors and camping, and she would spend much of her summer camping in Algonquin or volunteering at Scout Jamborees.
Scouting was of course another passion of hers. She started out as a leader and later spent much of her time training other leaders. She poured hours and hours into making sure her training courses were creative and fun. Another great honour of her life was being bestowed the prestigious Silver Acorn Award for her dedication to the Scouting organization.
My mom and I had many adventures together including road trips across the province and out in the Rockies, camping every summer in Algonquin, dog sledding, horseback riding, white water rafting, touring Italy and Greece and exploring Thailand with our family. She loved adventure and believed in seizing every opportunity and living life to the fullest.
My mother taught us many things, such as dinner will be ready “when it’s cooked,” that the thing you lost didn’t just “grow legs and walk away,” and to always see things from somebody else’s perspective, even when I just really really wanted to be angry. Most importantly though my mother always stressed how important it was to leave a place better than you found it, and mom you truly did leave this place better than you found it. You will be deeply missed not just by your family but by the great many people who you had a tremendous impact on.
In the immortal words of Winnie the Pooh “how lucky I am to have had something that makes saying goodbye so hard.”

A: Clare was a giver…..Giving to others, with a great sense of humour. I met Clare several times in Scouting . Had the pleaser to train leaders with her. Lots of laughs and stories. She will be greatly missed…..Scouter Eric Peachman

She was always ready to lend a hand and help wherever help was needed. She seemed to know everyone, and her wonderful smile and laugh made everyone feel happy. One awesome lady, who was an inspiration to many.

Clare came down to Waterford MI to be an integral part of her nephew Mitchells Eagle ceremony, just an example of her big heart. She will be terribly missed but fondly remembered.

I am so saddened to hear of Clare's passing. My deepest sympathy and condolences to her husband, children, grandchildren and all her family and friends. Clare was one of my Scout trainers about 15 years ago, and she and her team put the Scouting bug deep into my heart. She was so enthusiastic, full of energy, knowledge, kindness - such a wonderful mentor. I had the pleasure of volunteering with her over the years and I will truly miss her. Heaven has gained a beautiful Angel. Rest in Peace, Clare.

I met Clare 3 decades ago in Guiding and reconnected with her in Scouting. It was a privilege to train alongside her and an honour to know her. It was a pleasure to attend Gilwell camps with her. She will be terribly missed.

Clare was a great Scouting friend and inspired me to run for Blue Springs Reunion Group Committee a few years ago. I could count on her to help organize the Oshawa group to get things done. There was never any hesitation to assist and inspire others to "Do Their Best! "
She will be missed by all the Oshawa Gilwellians and Ontario Scouters she has trained over the years. RIP
