Raffaele was a true brother to my mother, Giovanna and her husband, Leonardo. The De Maria family made Canada their home thanks to our Sgro family. It was Zio Raffaele and Zia Maria that sponsored us to make Canada our home. Our families were one unit. We lived together in a huge rambling house on Crawford St. in Toronto in the early 1960s until Zio Raffaele bought his sprawling acreage in Markham where he built his home. We remember many weekends during the summers while men built the house, the women made lunch , and the youngsters played in the meadows. We followed Zio and Zia to settle in Markham and then a cottage at Lake Scugog. We were never far from one another. We are One family still.

For more than 50 years your father was a cherished friend who was family to us and always treated us the same way. We spent countless days together at the cottage, laughing and sharing wonderful times.

When we think of compare Raffaele, it is impossible not to picture his smile. Always welcoming, always joyful and happiest amongst family and friends. Was it luck that brought the Sgros and Siriannis together all those years ago, or was it fate? Whatever the reason, we were richer in spirit for having Raffaele, Maria and their family in our lives. Thank-you for so many special memories of good times spent together - especially at the lake. Scugog will not be the same without him.
