I had the good fortune of meeting John where he was my Principal for two wonderful years at St Theresa Catholic school in Whitby. He had a huge influence on my career. John was a true gentleman, always approachable and forever pleasant and welcoming. John motivated and encouraged me to become an educator at York University and subsequently his colleague as Principal.
Marg, I extend my condolences to you, your family and all those lives he touched. xo

To Marg and Family,
The world has lost a special man. A loyal friend that cannot be replaced but will be remembered always.
I will remember John as a good man who brought joy to all who knew him. He was kind, witty and had a wonderful sense of humour, the kind of person people wanted to be around.
We spent many hours together at the gym, golfing, walking, and solving all the world’s problems at Tim Hortons.
Rest in peace John – your work here is finished and by any standard- a job well done.
My sincere condolences go out to Marg and all of John’s family. May his memory be a blessing.

My memories of my cousin John are all of a lovely, kind and generous man who loved his wife and family above all - even above golf. He was the best of brothers to Nancy and Ruth and much loved in return. I see him now, moving wheelchairs around, smiling and happy and taking care of the girls. He will be missed in ways I can only imagine.

I always looked forward to our Friday morning golf game. Our shared love of the Maple Leafs and music always made for some interesting conversation. We may have even hit the odd good shot. Followed by a bowl of soup on the patio it was always a great day.
Rest in peace my friend.

The first thing you notice about my cousin John is
his smile , not a big grin , but a warm smile that reflected his calm , thoughtful personality .

I know it sounds cliché , but , John Nicholls was one in a million .

Dear Marg, Andrew and Alison.
We are heartbroken to learn of John’s passing. We were blessed to have had the Nicholls as next door neighbours for over 20 years. Over that time there were many conversations about our families, neighbourhood events and for John and Barry, many chats about sports and especially golf. John was a devoted family man and a true gentleman.
He will be dearly missed by all who had the good fortune to meet and know him. May he Rest in Peace.

John was not only a gentleman but a gentle man who treated people with dignity and compassion in his leadership and administrative roles, and in his private life. He had a strength of intellect and character that made him successful in all his endeavors.
I was lucky to work alongside John as his V.P. at St. Theresa's and to do a few LTO stints with him at St. Luke's after retirement. I also was lucky to get to know his great kids, Andrew and Alison, while V.P. at St. Christopher.
John really valued his many friends and was loyal to them right to the end.
We will miss his wry smile, easy laugh and calm demeanor.
God bless.
Mike and Esther.

Please accept my condolences .
John was a lovely person, a true gentleman. I always enjoyed working with him at DCDSB. Twenty one years ago John approached me with the idea of starting a Book Club. It was a wonderful opportunity to discuss books, learn about new authors, argue viewpoints, laugh and drink fine wine. I will miss John very much.

I am so grateful to have worked with John at St. Bernard Catholic School. He was supportive, kind, and always willing to share his expertise and experience with me as a first-time Vice-Principal. He very much influenced who I became as a Principal, and was not only a colleague, but a friend. I have lovely memories of when he and Marg came to visit us in our new home in Nova Scotia.
My condolences go out to his family, and to all of those whose lives were touched by his presence.

It is very difficult to put into words the feelings we have over the lose of such a good, good friend. Both Gloria and I had the privilege of working with John. There are too many cherished memories to elaborate on them all. As many have already stated...he was a well respected man, well read, kind, loyal a good sense of humor and had many more talents. I will always remember the great times we had at St. Isaac Jogues when I was principal and John was my VP. Our close friendship continued over the many years with the Board. We are truly blessed to have had John in our lives. We will remember him always. Pat and Gloria MacKinnon

To Marg, Andrew and Alison:
Words are difficult to write at this time. Over 40 years ago at Sir Albert Love I met John and am thankful I did in so many ways. Not only a great friend to me, but to so many people. Packed in the memory suitcase are terrific outings with John and the breakfast club to Argo & Marlies games, and places further along the route! Great times were always enjoyed with John and Marg by Geri and I. Unpacking these memories will continue to be a joy.

I remember the stormy winter night when I first met John Nichols. He drove over in blizzard conditions to St Matthews (from St Bernard's) to interview me for a teaching position at the new Whitby school. He was very surprised that I was still there, waiting near the door, by the time he arrived - rather late for our scheduled appointment. He said that I should have gone home long ago... even though he made the journey just in case I hadn't. I am glad I waited and I am glad he made the journey.
After making us cups of hot herbal tea just to warm him up, we sat down for the interview with the hope that the snow would let up while we talked. It was a mix of pedagogy and vision, goals and hopes. We talked about the art I had created on my resume envelope and the music I had chosen to play softly in the background. He shared his vision for the new school community and hoped that I would join him in making it happen. Although over the years, we didn't always agree on everything, I can honestly say that John was consistently gracious, kind, and funny. But more... he was a highly intelligent person with a philosopher's heart.
My fondest memory is the wonderful shade of red he would turn when riled or when he laughed too hard. He set a new standard for all of us, the day he kicked my class pet hamster - which was roaming around on the floor in a plastic exercise ball - forcefully across the room thinking it was a soccer ball. The hamster was fine but the razzing lasted for weeks. He took it in good spirit.
John, you will be remembered as a great listener, a fair, supportive and just school leader, and a character who kept us laughing. I wish you godspeed and I know the angels are welcoming you home.
Marg and family, you are in my heart, my thoughts and prayers. My deepest condolences to all.

John was greatly admired and was held in high esteem by many people. My husband Joe among them. He loved playing basketball with him and always referred to him as a perfect gentleman. I remember being part of his baby shower at St Francis de Sales School in Ajax. John was a good sport as he sat there and suffered through all the shenanigans of a room filled with mostly women. He dawned the ceremonially decorated hat and enjoyed a good laugh. He will be missed. Ruth, prayers are with you and the family to help you through the upcoming horror of sadness.
