Obituary of Doreen Mercurius

Please share a memory of Doreen to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Doreen Elaine Mercurius, nee Williams, was born December 16th, 1926, to Sylvina Decamp and John Williams, in Fort Island, Essequibo, Guyana.  Doreen was married to Fitzherbert Linden Mercurius (deceased) December 06, 1944, in Georgetown, Guyana.  Doreen along with her husband and minor children migrated to Montreal, Canada, in 1976.  She was so happy to start her new life in Canada.  However, she was not complete until she was able to assist into Canada her other grandchildren, some nieces and their children.  She loved them and they loved her right back, to her they were all her children and grandchildren.

Doreen had six children and along with her husband Fitzherbert, raised eight children.  Joy (Aubrey) Murray, Sandra (Roy) Bunbury, Denyse Mercurius, Yvette (Clyde) Matthews, Fitzherbert (Herby) deceased children Maurice, Walter and Wendy.  Doreen’s love for family was very strong, she also cared for many of her relatives, some lived along with her and her children for periods of time.  Doreen was a proud Grandmother of Rawle (Nicole) Campbell , Karen, Luana, Ashia, Dishan, Nicole (Patrick) Hibit, Lana, Shelley (Aric) Jamison, Randy, Rashwan (Prisca) Marecellin-Mercurius, Rasheed, Lonny, Bianca (Constantine) arris, Denzel, Shereena, Troy, Malik (DJ) Mercurius, Tarik, Jabahri, Ian (Audrey) Kellman, Leslyn, Lobsand (Natasha) Gumbs, Isis Gumbs and many others who lovingly call her Granny.  Doreen’s Great Grandchildren are Shammah, Micaiiah, Caleb, Milan, Oni, Nache, Easton, Shayla, Greyson, Ethan, Dresden, Rozay, Naveema, Ariah, Zion, Amani, Kari, Athena, Alora, Alya, Zye, Romeo, Renzo, Ellise, Kaneen, Reign, kai and Great Great-grandchild – Valentino.  Throughout her life Doreen fondly called Ms. Mac, was known for her hospitality, love of people, but her greatest love was expressed by her Baptism as one of Jehovah’s witnesses July 3rd, 1987.  She was proud to serve Jehovah by going from door-to-door in the ministry sharing the good news of God’s Kingdom to all who would listen.   Though Doreen became one of Jehovah’s witnesses later in life she auxiliary pioneered, that is she spent 50 – 60 hours some months sharing her Bible knowledge with others as she can.

To Doreen serving her Creator was the most important thing in her life.  When Doreen realized that her health was failing, the one thing she asked was that she be taken to her meetings for as long as she could.  Doreen was happy to let the nursing staff know that she was going to the Kingdom Hall, this continued until she was no longer physically or mentally able to attend.

Doreen spoke to all her grandchildren about Jehovah and the wonderful hope of everlasting life which she held close to her heart.  One of her grandsons said when asked what religion he was, he would say Jehovah Witness as he did not know or went to any other place of worship, only where Granny took him as a child.  Yes, when the Grandchildren visited her, they knew they would have to go to meetings.

Her Grands fondly remember her as the best Grandmother ever who not only disciplined them sometimes with the strap but also made them whatever they wanted to eat.  Her Grandsons in Law got into the act and started making their request for roti, puri, patties and lots of other goodies and she obliged.  Doreen loved to laugh, and make jokes, one of her grandchildren said, “she could have been a comedian”.

Doreen wore many hats.  She was a Beautician, training many in the art of hair and beauty care.  Also making her own beauty supply products.  She was known to have awesome graduation parties with many dignitaries handing out the diplomas to her students like one of the late Presidents of Guyana.

She was also known for her cooking and baking ability, many would engage her to make their wedding cakes, which included the Guyanese rum cake (known as Black cake), and a variety of pastries, cheese straws and many other delicacies for weddings and other functions.

To us children our mother was awesome, she taught us at an early age to love and care for our relatives and others, look out for each other and lastly try to be there for her resurrection.  In this she truly believed as one of Jehovah Witnesses.  We love you Mom…..
