It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Doreen Lawrence (nee McGurk), on Sunday, February 15, 2015 at Lakeridge Health Bowmanville. She leaves behind her beloved husband Paul and her loving sons, David (Chantelle) and Michael (Janie). Doreen was born in Montreal, the daughter of Alice and Emmett McGurk. She one of a large family, including Eileen, Patrick (Lisa and son Christopher), Mary, Michael (Jane and daughter Emma), Geraldine, Rita (Richard Hoyne and children Lisa (Steve) and Mark (Reenie)), Robert (children Melissa, Joseph and Aaron), Susan (Lucio Paiano and children Stephen (Sylvia) and Allison (Robert Toste) and their children (Emmett, Roary, Emery, and Calvin), Lynn (Randy Prebble and children Daniel (Shannon), Kevin (Ashley), Meghan and Emily).
Doreen’s career spanned two cities where first she taught at the Montreal Catholic School Commission before moving to Ontario and working as a teacher, vice principal and principal for the Durham Catholic District School Board. She enjoyed her contacts with the children she worked with, particularly those who needed her most.
She loved to travel and enjoyed vacationing in Florida, California, Jamaica, and Dominican Republic. Her interests included, quilting, playing board games and was an enthusiastic coach while watching her children in their various sporting events or while watching professional hockey, tennis and figure skating.
A special thanks to the team of care providers over the past few months: Dr. Paulovic, Dr. Burke, Dr.Myrehaug, Dr.Wierzbicki, the St. Elizabeth nurses, Personal Support Worker Elaine, and the Palliative Care Team at Bowmanville Hospital.
