Dear Janice and Family,
Words cannot begin to express our sadness over the loss of our dear friend Russ. At this time, we can only take comfort with the fact we were blessed to have known his friendship.
Our families have been good friends for over 20 years, and in the time, we’ve shared so many experiences. There have been many laughs, milestones and even some tears. In good times and bad, Russ was always there for support. He truly enjoyed the company of his family and all his friends. We were very lucky to have him as a friend.
Russ also had a passion for sports and the outdoors. The cottage, fishing, hockey and golf represented some of his favorite activities. And while he truly enjoyed these activities, he took more satisfaction from the fact he was able to share time with his family and friends.
You should also take comfort in knowing that Russ was truly devoted to his family. Nothing gave him more joy than proudly speaking about the accomplishments of his wife, his children’s families, and his grandchildren.
Russ was taken from us much too soon, however, he will always be a part of us and the memories will never be forgotten.
Lino, Carey, Kate and Grace

I would like to send my deepest sympathies and condolences to the Degnan Family and Russ's extended family. I was very shocked to hear that Russ had passed. He had such a joy and attitude of enjoying life. Always wanting to have a chat and listening to what you might have to say. I met Russ through pool. We've played together for 3 years and I've never heard a negative word out his mouth. The man loved talking about his children and especially his grand children. He will sadly be missed. One of the good ones gone too soon.❤

My deepest condolences and heartfelt sadness to Janice, Angie ( Sean, Nya, Kaden), Ashley (Patrick, Nicholas, Jackson), Eric (Leslie, Olin, Austin) and Russ’s brother Rick (Ginette)
I have the pleasure and honour of knowing your Husband, Father, Grandfather and Brother since 1984 when we meet in Windsor.
We hit it right off as co-workers and later as friends away from work playing hockey (surprise!).
Russ and I had some interesting times in Windsor. The time Russ wanted to see how fast he could get a locomotive going coming off the turn table and getting it stopped needless to say the results were not what Russ was expecting. Two nights later Russ and I were changing the brake rigging. Our hour long lunch breaks to play cribbage. The rest of the stories are secrets between Russ and I.
I was laid off and moved to Toronto Diesel Shop and a few years later Russ also moved to Toronto Diesel Shop as well. As it turned out Russ moved just around the corner from me.
In 1988 Russ started to coach Angie in Ringette and asked me to help with the goalie ( as I played goal) this was a start of what turned out to be 8 years of coaching together.
One of the biggest praises Russ received was from the players he coached, they would write on their registration forms for the next year that would only play for Russ.
When Eric was born Russ invited me to join him for a drink to celebrate Eric’s arrival. Let us say it turned out to be more than one drink.
We have played together on the same pool team for the last 10 years. Russ borrowing my reading glasses and giving me heck for them being so dirty then cleaning them for me then saying there you go Kenneth followed by a thank you Russell then a laugh between us.
One thing that remained constant in the 34 years I have known Russ was his Love for his family. When Russ talked about his family his eyes would get bigger and his smile would change slightly. When Russ was talking and showing pictures of his grandchildren his smile got even bigger.
Russ you were taken away far, far too soon, you will be missed.
Kenny

It is with a heavy and sad heart that John and myself sit in our kitchen in Courtmacsherry, in Ireland. We remember a man we only met briefly in a scale of life. We have such fond memories of you Russ, as do Nathan and Shannon. The kindness that you showed to us, when we came for that special time of Ashley and Patrick’s Wedding. We have so many memories to remember you by. Thank you for being a great buddy for Patrick and the kindness that you showed him. He will miss you
We give thanks for your life Russ, and for giving us Ashley, Nicholas and Olan. What a beautiful legacy you have left here on this earth. As we mourn your passing we remember your smile, good humour and caring ways. We were honoured to have met a wonderful human being as you were Russ.
May god bless Janice, Ashley, Eric and Angie, partners and grandchildren. May their hearts be filled with wonderful memories of you Russ at such a sad time. May you rest in Peace

Sending my heartfelt condolences on the passing of Russ.
I have known Russ since we were apprentices at CPR. Russ always moved forward with his career taking on management positions and bettering himself when the opportunity presented itself. Russ was not only a good manager to me but also a friend when I had a bout with cancer. Russ looked after everything for me at work and visited me at home. A real friend I would say. I will miss your smile buddy.
God speed,
your friend Gord

Russ and Janice have been our neighbours up at the cottage on Baptiste Lake since they bought their cottage about 3 or so years ago. They have been great neighbours -- we couldn't have asked for better. Russ's love for the cottage life was so evident by the pleasure he got fishing on the lake, working around the cottage, and sharing the cottage with his children and grandchildren. Russ taught and inspired Grant to fish -- showing him the way landing that huge walleye! But this year we joked about how the student (Grant) was showing the teacher (Russ) the way when Grant landed 3 big fish in a row while Russ came home empty handed. We will miss Russ greatly and offer our condolences to Janice, the kids and grandkids.

Russ was a great man, a good friend and I wish I had known him better. Russ was my supervisor at Obico Yard. Later after I retired, I last saw him at the Mandarin in Barrie for a Carmen's Reunion last spring. Russ was in fine form enjoying every one's company. Russ had mentioned to me to try and get everyone together again this fall. So I was shocked to learn that Russ had been torn away from us all. I'm going to miss Russ and I'm sorry he got short changed. He will be in my thoughts for a very long time.
There is a very old saying "That those who have passed are never really gone until the last person speaks their name".
And so Russ will be with me and others for a very long time.
Respectfully
Ron Howie

Dear Janice, Angie, Ashley, Eric and the Degnan family.
With heavy heart I write this message. My deepest condolences to all of you. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.
May god help you all through this awful time. Take solace in the fact that he is now in heaven with his parents.
My history with Russ my friend.
First time I saw Russ was his first day he started at CP when I was going home after I worked on night shift. When leaving that morning, I said , who is this fresh face kid, Afro type hairdo. I wondered where do they find these guys.
Two years later he came on nights. Didn’t take long to get to know him, he was one of us. He fit right in with me and my style. Thus started our friendship. We worked together, played hockey together, drank together and sometimes got into trouble together.
My father the Manager of the shop liked him as well. Russ went to Windsor to become a supervisor. We were all happy when he returned. He was one of our best supervisors, Diesel inspector, Planner and evidently a good shift Manager. Then he became, Asst shop Manager, HR, then Manager of our Vaughan facility.
Russ was dependable, trustworthy, serious and great guy to have in your corner. I could always look to him when I needed someone I could trust to get jobs done. He was a super team player and I was happy he was on my team.
We travelled together for work, played in golf tournaments. We were neighbors and great friends, always talk about the good old days at Toronto Diesel. Every one that new him liked him, he was a friend to everyone .
It’s devastating what has happened, he will be missed by his family and friends tremendously.
I will miss my long time good friend.
God bless.
