Frank was a great hockey man with an amazing eye for talent. We all know that. However, more than that, he was a fine teacher who had an influence on a little boy he taught at Lakewoods PS in south Oshawa. Me. Considering his love of sports, it's not surprising that Frank organised a floor hockey league for all of us. The games took place in the school gym over the lunch hour. I asked "Mr. Jay" if I could do play by play for the games.
"Wouldn't you rather just play?"
I didn't hold out a lot of hope.
A few days later he took me aside and told me that he had arranged for a microphone to be set up on the stage of the gym and that the play by play would go over the school's PA system. No doubt torturous for the staff, but a big deal to my 11 year old self.
Looking back many years later with the eyes of an adult, I saw a man who did what great teachers do: Encourage and nurture little people. As a professional broadcaster, I ran into Frank more times than I could count in hockey rinks all over the world. He would often joke about my "first play by play role". To him, I'm sure I was always "that little kid who wanted to announce when I taught him at Lakewoods." To me, he'll always be "Mr. Jay." A fine man who helped push a little kid off on a journey.
My sincere condolences to family and friends. May wonderful memories and love get you through these sad times.

And when great souls die,
after a period peace blooms,
slowly and always irregularly.
Spaces fill with a kind of
soothing electric vibration.
Our senses, restored, never
to be the same, whisper to us.
They existed. They existed.
We can be. Be and be better
for they existed.
- Maya Angelou
Rest In Peace, dear Frank.

Please accept my condolences, Mr. Jay was my grade 7 homeroom teacher at Whitby Senior in 1979-80. He is one of the best teachers I ever had and fueled a love of history that continues to this day. I also loved his sly sense off humor. A fellow student had the last name Bruneau, there was a Canadiens player from the 20’s and 30’s named Bruneteau whose nickname was Mud, when my classmate made a mistake, Mr. Jay said “ from now on your name is Mud. He called him that the rest of the year. I still take great delight in remembering Mr. Jay’s smirk when calling him Mud. A fine man taken much too soon.

Frank was my teacher in Grade 6 at Lakewood's Public School and Grade 8 at Whitby Senior. Frank did have a nickname for most of his students my was Charlie Huddy, Frank drafted Charlie to the OHL. I also played hockey and Frank came out to watch one of my games, I was only around 10 or 11 at the time. I can still remember him driving a AMC Gremlin at Whitby Senior. Great guy sadly gone to early.

Our thoughts are with you, the family, at this time. How shocking to hear about Frank! He was in our classes at Eastdale for high school and we had a great visit with him at the Eastdale reunion a couple years ago. I also taught school and saw Frank considerably during our careers. His reputation as a great teacher was well known. I know the same passion he had in the classroom and for hockey life made him a spark for anyone who knew him. He will truly be remembered, in fact we often talked about him at our retired teacher's breakfast club even though he travelled so much and we didn't see him often. He has left a permanent mark in this world and we will be sorry to be without him.

Mr. Jay was my grade five teacher way back in the 90s. He was full of energy and had a great sense of humour that others have already mentioned. He had nicknames for all of us, great stories to share, and a love for hockey. I don't think anyone who had Mr. Jay as a teacher will forget the presence he created in the classroom. I certainly will never forget him. My condolences to Frank's family and friends.

Ron and I were saddened to hear of Frank’s passing.
My memories of Frank go back to a time when we were teenagers. An all round great guy to be around.
We reconnected again through my son Luke’s hockey. Ron had many great chats with Frank over the years. His thoughtfulness will not be forgotten when Ron was experiencing health issues. His calls of encouragement were greatly appreciated.
A wonderful friend who will be greatly missed.
Our condolences to his wife Lynn and family.

Heather and Ron Pither

Mr. Jay taught me so much more than the standard 5th grade curriculum. He taught me life lessons which, I call upon to this day, nearly three decades later.
I am not ashamed to admit that Mr. Jay was the best teacher I have ever had. I am ashamed to admit however, that I didn't appreciate, or recognize his efforts until I had moved onto the next grade.
I also never got a chance to shake his hand, and, genuinely thank him for helping to make me who I am today, and, for being an all around awesome man.
I never encountered another teacher whom every other teacher in the school liked, and, who could make every student in his class, or, in the schoolyard smile or laugh with a joke or display of outrageous school spirit. (I can still see him doing his alligator/crocodile clap.)
I am glad to have known him, and, I will never forget him.
My sincerest condolences to his family, and, loved ones.

In my mind, Mr Jay will always be one of the best. I was fortunate to have been in his grade 5 class at Bellwood PS. I remember him as always smiling, never short on patience and a genuine man truly interested in his students. It’s funny to see Mr Delong talk about busy weekend trips because as a student, you never would have known he had two very busy careers. As a teacher myself now, I can’t imagine how he always seemed so relaxed. My sincere condolences to all of you who will no doubt miss his laugh and great sense of humour. May he Rest In Peace.

I was one of the lucky students at Bellwood P.S. who had the privilege of being in Mr Jays grade 5 class. He really knew how to connect with the kids and often had the whole class in fits of uncontrollable laughter. I remember the last time I saw him was about 5 years ago at a gas station, I yelled out “Mr Jay!” He turned around and looked at me with a huge smile on his face and said “Hee-Haw, it’s good to see you again baby!” Hee-Haw was the nickname he bestowed on me during my time in his class. I was surprised he recognized my face after 15 years and even more surprised he remembered my real name and nickname. He touched so many lives and really made class fun. I’ll never forget you Mr Jay, the king of portable 7.

On top of Frank's weekday teaching duties, I remember his fatigue from weekend scouting flights for the OHL and NHL. The kids loved him, due to his sense of humour and his habit of assigning fond nicknames to every student. [Yes, he could remember the true names of his students. I'll bet many students still remember their "handle", and, perhaps, still use it.] I also recall Frank mentioning his adventurous youth, growing up and attending school in the area just east of the old Cullen Gardens Park, and not far from the new board of education's Sinclair complex. In anticipation of retiring, he showed us plans for changes to the family cottage. This is a tough time for family. Be together a lot. Remembering Frank's life should be a celebration - a hoot, in other words!
