So very sorry ....
Mr Vanmannen was the principal during my time at Knox Christian School in Bowmanville. He was also active as our music teacher and French teacher. He was the one who taught me to play the trumpet. I in turn was able to teach my son to play the trumpet and he has developed a passion for it and he has tutored other kids. His gift of music continues.....
Rest in Peace Mr Vanmannen ... enjoy the beautiful music!!!

I had the pleasure of having Mr. V many times throughout my years at T.R. Our class was known for being very rambunctious, and really, the only times I remember us actually being quiet was when we were listening to his stories. He taught us English, Math and English, but he also taught us important life skills that have stuck with me. We were so fortunate that he dedicated his time to ski club, and we spent many Thursday evenings with him at Kirby. At our graduation, he referred to me and Lauren as his urchins, and he said it in such a loving tone that I thought it was a compliment until I looked it up (recently). He had a positive impact on so many lives and he will be greatly missed.

To the Van Manen family, I wish to offer my deepest and heartfelt condolences. A beautiful caring man who always thought and cared for others before himself. Thank you for making an example in which to follow. You opened up your home and welcomed me and my children while we filmed the movie in Toronto. Not only did you make us feel apart of your home, we felt apart of your life. One of my fondest memories from that time was working together to solve the daily newspaper puzzles. While this was just shy of 17 years ago, I can't solve a jumble word puzzle without thinking of you. For this I will be forever grateful. May we sail together one day.

Some people make a difference
Mr Van Manen was definitely one of those people
My daughter was lucky enough to have Mr Van Manen as a teacher at TR McEwen.
He definitely fostered the love of music in many students
My daughters memories include - "reading Animal Farm to us and how he knew sometimes schedules just had to be broken"
Gone but never forgotten
Our condolences on your loss

My sincerest condolences on the passing of your loved one.
I knew him as M. Van Manen, he was one of my teachers at College Hill Public School and I never forgot how kind he was.
I can remember him talking about his family and he was always sharing stories with the entire class about his life.
He was a very caring teacher and he encouraged us to always do our best.
I will always have fond memories of him.
May he rest in peace.

Andy and my thoughts, condolences and prayers are with you, Theresa and family. May you all feel the powerful sustenance of the Holy Spirit giving you strength, comfort and peace.
I'm thanking God for the gift of memory—such a legacy of memories John leaves—to so many! I'm imagining Jesus smiling back at him on John's arrival to his eternal Home. I think there will be a music room in the mansion Jesus had prepared for him! Love, Joey

I met John through the DPC, and I can honestly say I was blessed to know him for the few short years that I did. He was such a wonderful, caring soul who genuinely cared about everyone he met. Every time I saw him he always asked about my nephew and my family back in Newfoundland, my boyfriend, even my dog. He was genuinely interested in your life, and loved to talk to you about it, and to share aspects about his life and family as well. It's not every day you get the privilege to meet someone as genuine as John. The world has lost a great man, and he will surely be missed by those whose lives he touched.

I am a parent of six children who were blessed and fortunate to have had John as a teacher and friend. John was the classic teacher. Inspiring, funny, artistic and he showed his thrill and joy of teaching every day. He brought the gift of music into our children’s soul and he was a yteacher who made a difference. Your gifts will not be forgotten. They live on in every child who shared a pathway with you. Our sincerest and hearts sympathies. He was a gentleman.
