Although I’ve only worked with Grant for a fairly short amount of time, his authenticity, uncompromising integrity and unrelenting positive demeanor were an inspiration to anyone who had the pleasure to work with him. He made our work life better. A true class act. His presence will be missed, but not forgotten.

Today I learned of Grant’s sad passing and was moved to memories of a wonderful officer, superb shipmate and brother Naval warrior whom I had not seen, sadly, in many years. The memories were warm and comforting and I trust that everyone who knew Grant can find within their own recollections of him a tender remembrance of an all to short life, well lived. My heart aches for Marina, his children, family and many close friends and acquaintances. Often there are no words that can convey the genuine melancholy felt, but for a sailor, no words are more poignant that those found in Tennyson’s, “Crossing the Bar”
Sunset and evening star,
And one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar,
When I put out to sea.
But such a tide as moving seems asleep,
Too full for sound and foam,
When that which drew from out the boundless deep
Turns again home.
Twilight and evening bell,
And after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness of farewell,
When I embark;
For tho’ from out our bourne of Time and Place
The flood may bear me far,
I hope to see my Pilot face to face
When I have crost the bar.

My heart hurts to hear this news. Grant was with me in 10 Platoon during Basic Officer Training Course (BOTC) in the summer of 1988. My fondest memory of Grant was walking in on him in our room to find him eating freeze dried coffee straight out of the jar with a spoon… because we were too stressed and short on time to boil water :-) Grant was always funny, kind and an all-round great guy. My deepest condolences... wishing the family strength and peace.
