I was deeply saddened to hear that Karl passed away this past week. He was taken far too soon.
I had the pleasure to first meet Karl and become friends around 1984, when our paths crossed at the University of Toronto and continued at ORTECH in Mississauga. As a young engineer, Karl had a passion and eye for the different aspects of any new technology he was developing while being humble, pragmatic, and humorous. Over his career, Karl’s name was on an impressive list of patents in the field of engine and vehicle systems with a focus on clean energy. He was highly collaborative person and a great team member / leader.
Karl’s eagerness for canoeing, hiking and fishing allowed him to get out of the city and enjoy nature with friends – where he could reflect and renew himself. Several canoe trips were orchestrated during those “early” years in the 80s and 90s.
I still vividly remember a canoe trip that the two of us went on in the mid-1980s to Quetico Provincial Park (west of Thunder Bay). We did the long drive in Karl’s faithful but under-powered VW Rabbit Diesel, fully loaded with his canoe on the roof, lots of camping gear and his beloved canine buddy known as “Nappy”. Karl usually would chuckle each time he saw the traffic approaching in the mirror, especially when climbing the steep hills of Northern Ontario and he would skillfully make way for the quicker traffic. We pretty much had to laugh all the way to the park because we were in one of the slowest vehicles on the Trans Canada highway. Once arriving at the park, Karl and Nappy were both at ease with the beauty of the pristine lakes and forests which were nestled in the Canadian Shield. We had one minor encounter with a young black bear that came into camp during a dinner, as we sat on the shoreline, but Karl skillfully scared it away. Karl was very pleased when he realized that Nappy had wisely stayed well away from the bear, without barking once, during the episode.
Over the years after I moved out west to BC, our interactions grew less frequent. But when I was occasionally in Ontario, I could see saw Karl and family. He was always accommodating, and we could laugh and talk like we hadn’t seen each other for just a short while. He will be truly missed, but not forgotten.
Charna, Kyra, Cierra, and Miriam my deepest condolences are sent today.
With love,
Al Welch

Karl and I have known each other since our teens. Karl has always had an affinity of the great outdoors and simpler things such as fishing, canoeing and hiking through the woods. In the early days, before the business of life took hold, a group of us would head up north as often as we could to hunt and fish, and drink beer, and generally enjoy each other's company…and dream. As the song goes “Those were the Days my Friend”…. Then life caught up to us and the excursions became less frequent until everybody went their separate way and far afield. When I returned to the Toronto area in the late 80s Karl and I made contact again. And I think that best describes our friendship. We could easily renew it after a long absence. There were no expectations and no obligations. I am forever grateful to Karl for securing a position for me at ORTECH Corp where I met my future wife. We raised our family in Ottawa but still kept in touch over the years and our two young families would get together at times for a camping trip either at Algonquin or at Bon Echo parks. Karl’s love of the outdoors was infectious and our girls have fond memories of catching their first fish. Thanks to our supportive wives, Karl and I, joined by a colleague from the ORTECH years, managed to get away for 2 very memorable fly-in fishing trips and one boat in fishing trip in northern Ontario. The first trip was a true test of their support since communications were very limited. Karl rarely complained and was always appreciative of our adventures. For the past 3 years, Karl and I have met up in the fall at his cottage on Whitestone Lake for some fishing and mostly to enjoy the fall colours and just chill and ironically rehash the good old days.
Nicole and I were fortunate to see Karl one last time at his home in Oshawa, shortly before he passed. We reminisced, we shared some old photos, and managed a few laughs. I remember one of the last thing he said to us as we were leaving was “all I have left is memories”. The memories will have to do for all of us who knew him. He was taken much too soon.
Our deepest condolences to Charna, Kyra, Cierra, and Miriam.
Love
Tony, Nicole, Maria, Sylvie
