My sincerest condolences to Christine, Colleen, Pat, Emily, and Michael. I've had the fortune of knowing Chris for most of my life. He was my English teacher in grades 9, 12 and OAC, my colleague at DO'C, a mentor at OECTA, and most importantly a friend who loved the outdoors and fishing as much as I did. He was truly passionate about everything he did, his positive influence will continue to live on through the thousands of lives he touched. Extremely intelligent but never boastful, he was always humble and offered a helping hand to those in need. He will forever be missed, and I consider myself very fortunate to call him friend.

it will not last the night;
but ah, my foes, and oh, my friends-

My condolensences to the Montgomery family for the loss of a wonderful man, with a great smile. I first met Chris as my sons teacher at D'OC and soon realized what an amazing English teacher he was and later I was privileged to work with Chris at DCDSB. He was very supportive of me in my role and I soon was learning from his teachings of secondary timetables. Rest in peace Chris.

We both had the good fortune of teaching at DO’C in the 90s when Chris was one of the “giants” roaming its halls. It is difficult to know how to describe him. On the one hand we aren’t sure what to say and on the other there aren’t enough words. Chris was the consummate professional who acted as a mentor (even if he didn’t know it) to us newbies. He had a strong quiet presence but was unafraid to speak his mind when necessary. When he left DO’C to become our OECTA president, we always felt secure in the knowledge that Chris had our backs. We are so grateful to have had a competent, caring leader in Chris.
Words cannot express how saddened we are to know that he is no longer with us. We wish Christine, Colleen, Patrick, Michael, Emily hope and healing in the knowledge that Chris’ spirit lives on in so many of us.
God’s peace and blessings.

Dear Colleen & Montgomery Family,
I am very sorry to hear of the loss of Chris/your dad. Colleen, you were my best friend for all of elementary school and I feel like the Montgomery home was second to mine. I have so many fond memories from my childhood spent with your family. I remember when you brought home your Husky-Shephard and named him "Panda"... I remember going snowmobiling for the first time when I was 13 at your cottage in Bancroft and us listening to R.E.M. "Out of Time" practically on repeat in our room... I remember playing in your backyard on Whitehall Crt. and skating on the home-made ice rink your dad made... I remember practicing dances to Madonna and Tiffany songs for school dance projects... I remember playing soccer with you... and I remember your dad giving me a ride to school... Your family helped nurture and enrich my childhood and I am very grateful for these memories. While you and I have since grown apart, I want you to know, Colleen, that I hold these memories dear to my heart and I will never forget the positive impact that your family played in my life. Sending my deepest condolences to you all during this difficult time. I am very sorry for your loss and I will keep all of you in my thoughts and prayers.

My condolences to the Montgomery Family. I enjoyed many meetings and bargaining sessions with Chris during the last 8 years. He was honest, forthright and proud of his members in OECTA. He fought the good fight on behalf of everyone he represented even when the case was not strong. He was tenacious in presenting on his members behalf and he advanced arguments to support the member regardless of the situation. He was strategic and knew when to cut a deal that worked for OECTA even if it took all night to get the deal. Union leaders are seldom celebrated for the good work they do on behalf of members but they are never forgotten by those they have helped. As an Employer representative, Chris helped me many times and often pointed the way to a solution we could both live with. I admired his note taking and impeccable record keeping of memorandums of settlement and never doubted that when he put forth a passioned argument he could back it up with documentation. I will miss our discussions about our adult children and our grandchildren and of course basketball and hockey, but mostly I will miss his wry sense of humour and his kindness. I am comforted by the knowledge his path to Heaven is paved with so many good deeds he did on behalf of his family, students, friends and colleagues. May he rest in eternal peace.

As I read the posts on Chris's Tribute Wall my heart is full by the many comments about Chris's kindness and his famous smile!! I met Chris in 1973 when we were team mates playing for the Oshawa Hawkeyes football team. Chris was an exceptional player who had a passion to win. He was a hard hitting, ferocious player and feared by the opposition. On several occasions Chris,#71, would take an opposing player to the ground aggressively and then get up and have that famous smile on his face (sometimes the referee thought Chris's actions were too aggressive). The message here is Chris by nature was a kind, soft spoken, caring person but do not get in his way during competition. After our playing days a few of us players continued to have a close friendship. Our group consisted of Chris Hurst, Danny O'Neill, Marc Adams, Chris Montgomery and myself. We, as a group, went on fishing trips, played in baseball tournaments, went to concerts, attended each others weddings, traveled and had too many late night dinner parties -- we had a blast and Chris's smile was all an important part of these experiences!! Chris is God Father to our first born child, Nowel, so he will always be connected to the Whitehouse family. A few weeks ago I traveled back to Canada to attend a gathering at Marc Adams house. Everybody enjoyed visiting with Chris and Christine. I feel fortunate I had the opportunity to say goodbye to my dear friend. In the early morning of October 12, Chris crossed the river and went home. The community in Heaven now gets their time to be with Chris and enjoy his famous smile. I love Chris Montgomery - RIP #71.

I am blessed to have started my career as a teacher with Chris as my curriculum chair. Chris made me feel welcome and supported and guided me in my early years. I truly appreciated his calm and thoughtful advice. He was an incredible teacher who made our department better and made me a better teacher. Chris was also there for important milestones in my life. It makes me smile to look at pictures of Chris, dressed as Santa Claus at the OECTA Christmas party, listening to my kids ask for their Christmas wishes. I was always in awe of his ability to stay composed and to think quickly in his role as OECTA chief negotiator and president; his hard work benefited us all. For a man so eloquent with his words, I will miss his emails composed entirely in the subject line. Christine, Colleen, Patrick, Emily, Michael and family you are in my thoughts through this difficult time. Chris will be missed by all fortunate enough to have known him.

Our condolences to Christine, Colleen, Patrick, Emily and Michael. I had the pleasure of having breakfast with Chris early in September, courtesy of our "chauffeur" Paul. I will always remember that day for several reasons. I was amazed at the courage he showed while chatting about his diagnosis, how many times he said to me while looking at my breakfast, "are you going to finish that" and how many home baked cookies he ate while sitting on my backyard deck shortly after our breakfast. Paul took a picture of Chris and I at the restaurant which I will always cherish. Chris and I had many a laugh talking in the shop "office" about our kids, sports, fishing and our similar experiences growing up in opposite ends of Toronto. I will always remember his sense of humor, his friendship, his professionalism in teaching and as President of our union and his love and devotion to his family. Words cannot express how saddened we are, he was a great friend who left us much to soon.

Such sad news to hear this week. Mr. Montgomery was an amazing educator and had a way of teaching the English curriculum like no other, and from Grade 9 to Grade 12 he was also the best basketball coach many of us had. He gave young men and women opportunities to succeed and left a lasting impact with his coaching, his educational spirit, his knowledge and overall personality. Mr. Montgomery had a way of connecting with you that was different than most teachers. A connection that was evident anytime you crossed paths with him-even after graduation.
From those early 7:15 am basketball practices, to readings of Shakespeare after first lunch, all the way to a LOSSA basketball championship, and everyone else’s personal experiences- he will be greatly missed.
Sincere condolences to his family. God bless.

Christine and family, words cannot begin even to express my deepest sympathy to all of you in the loss of Chris. Chris always encouraged and often times fought for the dignity of all in his work, and that means both for students and for the teachers. He always had a smile on his face to greet people whether it was at the OECTA office, at the various schools, or just meeting him somewhere in the city. I will always remember how Chris got in touch with me after my year off in Cancer recovery when I had returned to work. He had just assumed his duties as OECTA President and when he read what had happened to me, he got right on the phone to check in to see how I was doing in my re-integration back to work. A class act indeed.
May God bless Chris and welcome him home with open arms. May God enwrap all of you in love and continue to be with all of you as you move slowly forward.

I have a feeling inside I can’t explain much like many others that have had the great honour to be a close friend of Chris . Being a young new teacher from the East Coast with no experience, family or friends , Chris was always there for me over the years. I would ask him things that I would ask no other. Chris always made me feel comfortable and safe around colleges and social settings, particularly the old DOC Boys Club. I am very proud to say I enjoyed that Boys club. I learned many tricks of the trade over countless hours of laughter and fun. Chris will never be forgotten and fondly remembered in many of my conversations especially when I pour a cold, fresh Guinness. Love you Chris Montgomery. Watch over all of us and RIP.

This is the least I could do to say thank you for all the help Chris provided to me as OECTA President. You may not know that when my sister was widowed suddenly I called Chris and he offered support (as he had taught her when she was a student at DO'C). Chris was able to guide her through some of the process of dealing with her husband's affairs as he was a teacher with Halton Catholic. The O'Leary family respected Chris so much.

Mr. Montgomery was an amazing teacher. He taught me in grade 9 English back in 1992. He made English my favourite subject from day 1. Every time I read (or watch) Romeo & Juliet I remember him sitting on the edge of his desk explaining all the references to our little unknowing innocent grade 9 minds with a smirk and laughing at our reactions. He was a great influence in my life, and many others, and one of my most memorable teachers at DOC. My heart goes out to his family and friends. He was a wonderful person.

Chris was the nicest, most soft spoken and intelligent person I’ve ever known. He was one of a kind and will be so missed. My condolences to all who loved him. He was a great man!
